The New Heart of the Zoo

CONNECTED FORESTS

by Piper O’Neill
Presented by Seattle Seahawks

What good is a house with many rooms if there are no hallways to connect them?

Artist Piper O’Neill reminds us that tigers need more than protected pockets of land—they need connected forests as they search for food, water and mates.

Woodland Park Zoo and Panthera work together with on-the-ground partners in Malaysia to conserve tigers and their forests. Every zoo visit makes this work possible.

Artist Statement

“I explore themes of nostalgia and inherited history in my work. The links that bind us to the past reveal unexpected truths that I find fascinating. Given these considerations, my tiger's theme of Connected Paths is an opportunity to relate the need to forge meaningful connections we experience as humans with the very literal need of the Malayan tiger to safely traverse and connect with different geographic locations. The parallel exists in that both contexts are an undeniable requirement for life to continue.

My material usage includes auto body paint, vinyl wrap and plexiglass.”
