BUTTERFLIES OF THE NORTHWEST

Oregon Silverspot (Speyeria zerene hippolyta)

Declared federally threatened in 1980.

Threats: Loss of grassland habitat; in particular its preferred food, the early blue violet (Viola adunca).

Recovery plan: Give butterflies a headstart by raising eggs in captivity until they are ready to change from pupae to adult butterfly; then release them into a protected area on the Oregon Coast. WPZ staff and volunteers grow early blue violet plants so that larvae and pupae have their favorite food to eat.

Partners: Woodland Park Zoo, Oregon Zoo, United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, and Lewis and Clark College.

Drink a beer, save a butterfly

Raise a glass to butterfly conservation with the all new Silverspot IPA created by Pelican Pub & Brewery.

Celebrating efforts to repopulate the threatened Oregon silverspot butterfly in its native Pacific Northwest grassland habitat, the IPA raises awareness of and contributes a portion of the proceeds to this collaborative conservation effort.

Pelican brew masters selected the blend of Sterling, Fuggle and Meridian hops to deliver an herbal, floral, spicy and tangerine-like flavor for the 6% abv English-Style IPA. Silverspot IPA is the sixth addition to Pelican’s core lineup, making it available year round and distributed by the bottle throughout the Northwest.

NEW: Silverspot IPA is now a national award winner! The butterfly brew took home a Silver Medal in the English-Style Indian Pale Ale category at the Great American Beer Festival in fall 2012.
