Celebrating Conservation Leadership

Thrive 2020 co-chairs Warren Brown, EdD, and Patti Savoy invite you to support wildlife conservation with Woodland Park Zoo.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected us all in many ways. The planet and its people have shown great resiliency during these challenging times. As we see the positive environmental impacts of changing human behavior, we must think about how we can carry this momentum forward for the benefit of people and animals everywhere.

Restrictions on travel and social distancing protocols have forced Woodland Park Zoo’s field conservation scientists to refocus their work and think in new and creative ways to continue saving wildlife. Thrive attendees contribute critical funds needed to support the zoo’s field conservationists and save species and habitats in the Pacific Northwest, Papua New Guinea and around the world.

Thrive 2020 honors world renowned conservationist Lisa Dabek, PhD, Woodland Park Zoo Senior Conservation Scientist and Director of the Papua New Guinea Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program. In 1994, Lisa first traveled to Papua New Guinea to study the endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroo.

Today, the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program is a model community-based conservation initiative that created the first-ever official Conservation Area in Papua New Guinea. Covering nearly 187,000 acres, the YUS Conservation Area has brought together 50 communities and more than 14,000 rural landowners to protect their cloud forests, wildlife and even coastal coral reefs.
