Veterinary Technician Skills

What education and experience do you seek in the ideal candidate?
The ideal veterinary technician, or vet tech for short, candidate for a job at the zoo would have a degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited school, a valid Washington State Vet Tech license and at least two years of experience as a veterinary technician, working with exotic animals, preferably in a zoo or aquarium.

What personal characteristics do you seek in the ideal candidate?
Personal characteristics would include: dedication, interest in conservation, serious desire for a career with exotic animals, patience, perseverance and a sense of humor.

Do you prefer graduates of a particular school or training program?
Yes, in fact we require that all vet techs are accredited by a veterinary technician training school or college.

Do you generally hire full time for this position?
This can vary. We have full-time, permanent positions and part-time temporary positions depending on the needs at any particular time.

What are the physical requirements on the job?
Being a vet tech can be a very physically demanding profession. You will need strength, lifting ability and endurance to perform a variety of tasks throughout the day. There are also risks of exposure to pathogens, radiology, anesthesia and biohazardous materials.

Typically, how many qualified applicants apply per opening?
Qualified 50 - 100, unqualified 150 – 200. We only accept technicians who have been licensed or certified from accredited schools. Look on the Internet or in your local Yellow Pages for accredited schools. Ask your school’s career counselor for how to contact these schools.

Are there regular cycles or seasonal ups and downs?
No, it is busy all the time!

What is the entry level salary range?
Approximately $16.00 / hour

Are there advancement and education opportunities?
Yes, the zoo subsidizes attendance at the annual Zoo Vet Techs conference and other training classes and opportunities.

Do you offer paid internships? Unpaid internships? On the job training?
No paid internships. Unpaid internships are reserved for qualified students from accredited schools (limited to two students per year). We generally work directly with the schools to find the appropriate student.

We very much encourage you to attend an accredited Veterinary Technician program. In Washington state, those programs are at Pierce College in Tacoma or Yakima Valley Community College.
