Woodland Park Zoo- PRESS RELEASE
| June 8, 2007 Zoo’s elephant Hansa dies suddenly Contact: |
Visit the Hansa Memorial Page Seattle - Woodland Park Zoo staff, volunteers and Board express extreme sadness over the unexpected passing of 6 1/2-year-old Hansa (HAHN-suh), who was found dead early this morning in the Elephant Barn. She apparently died quietly in her sleep. The female Asian elephant had displayed colic-like symptoms since last Thursday, a decrease in appetite and activity. Animal Health staff conducted numerous tests, monitored her closely, and provided additional supportive care in the form of fluids and antibiotics. All the tests proved inconclusive. She improved slightly early in the week and appeared to be stabilizing. A necropsy will be performed and results will be released as soon as they are available. Hansa, born November 3, 2000, was the first elephant born at the zoo and in the state of Washington. Her mother is 28-year-old Chai (rhymes with eye). The Elephant Forest will be closed all day Friday.
“Our beloved Hansa’s short life was in the best hands of elephant care and management,” explained Woodland Park Zoo President and CEO Dr. Deborah Jensen. “Of course, our elephant care staff, other staff and volunteers, and our Board are deeply saddened. We will all miss her. We are a family here and we will provide as much support and comfort possible during this difficult time.” In addition to Chai, the remaining herd consists of: 40-year-old Bamboo, female Asian elephant; and 38-year-old Watoto (wah-TOE-toe), female African elephant. Memorials for Hansa can be placed outside the zoo’s South Entrance at N. 50th St. & Fremont Ave. N. *****
