Willawong Station opens Memorial Day weekend - A new bird feeding experience at the zoo

What:
Flock to the zoo for the grand opening of Willawong Station at Woodland Park Zoo beginning May 28. The zoo’s newest exhibit vicariously transports visitors to the world of the Australian parrot. It offers visitors a fun opportunity to feed more than 150 free-flying colorful birds æ they’ll literally have them eating right out of their hands! Opening day festivities will include tattoos, fun giveaways and much more.

The bird collection includes: budgerigars (known to some as parakeets or budgies), cockatiels (actually the smallest member of the cockatoo family) and rosellas. Willawong Station encourages visitors to not only discover more about the birds they are interacting with, but to learn about responsible care and conservation for birds both in the wild and at home.

WHEN:
Opens: Saturday, May 28
Opening day festivities: 9:30 a.m.– 2:00 p.m.
Exhibit hours: 9:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. daily

Where:
Willawong Station is located in the Australasia exhibit near the North Entrance at N. 59th St. & Phinney Ave. N.

Opening festivities will take place in the zoo’s South Entrance Plaza at N. 50th St. & Fremont
Ave. N.

Cost:
Visitors will be charged an additional admission of $1 to Willawong Station, which includes a seed stick to feed the birds; free for kids 2 and under; $1 for additional seed sticks.

Opening day activities are free with zoo admission. Admission: Adult (13-64) $10; Child (3-12) $7; Toddler (0-2) Free. Seniors and disabled receive a discount and zoo members receive free zoo admission year-round.

Hours: Zoo opens at 9:30 a.m. daily, 365 days of the year. Closing times vary: 5:00 p.m. March 15 through April 30; 6:00 p.m. May 1 through September 14; 5:00 p.m. September 15 through October 14; 4:00 p.m. October 15 through March 14.Parking: $3.50. Parking is limited.

Gifts/Food: Visit the ZooStore for unique gifts and zoo souvenirs and the Rain Forest Food Pavilion to quench your thirst or appetite. Open daily during regular zoo hours.
