Join Woodland Park Zoo’s Deputy Director Bruce Bohmke to explore Tanzania’s
spectacular national parks and reserves. Sinya Reserve is home to large herds
of bull elephants, striped hyena, Maasai giraffe, lion and leopard. Meet members
of the local Maasai community to learn about the culture of these nomadic pastoralists.
At Tarangire National Park, Tanzania’s third largest national park, you’ll
meet with elephant researcher Charles Foley. Game drives will take you in search
of the park’s resident animal populations: antelope, elephant, hyena, giraffe
and leopard. Visit Lake Manyara to search for tree-climbing lion, Cape buffalo,
and view thousands of flamingos in the soda lake. Descend 2,000 feet along the
steep walls of the Ngorongoro Crater onto the floor of this ancient caldera to
view black-maned lion, the endangered black rhino, hippo, wildebeest and zebra.
Enjoy a bush walk near Ol Moti Crater. Game drives and bush walks in the vast
wilderness of the Serengeti will provide opportunities to witness the annual
wildebeest migration. Cost: $6,550 per person, includes round-trip airfare from
Seattle. Optional 6-day extension to Zanzibar includes a Spice Tour of the islands,
and a visit to the Jozani Forest. Cost: $1,086.
