What:
A baby Goeldi’s monkey, born April 8, is now on public view in the award-winning Tropical Rain Forest exhibit. Media are invited to watch as keepers provide enrichment for the tiny male monkey and his family.

The infant, which currently weighs 250 grams, was handraised by staff due to a lack of appropriate maternal care. Both parents were also living at the Animal Health Complex so they could remain in close proximity to their infant. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Animal Health and keeper staff, the Goeldi’s was successfully reintroduced to his parents.

When:
Thursday, July 3, 11:00 a.m.

Where:
Enter the zoo through the ARC near the West Gate at N. 55th St. & Phinney Ave. N. Staff will escort you to the Goeldi’s enclosure in the Tropical Rain Forest exhibit.

Other:
The birth of this Goeldi’s monkey represents the first surviving offspring of this endangered species born at the zoo and is significant for populations in zoos and in the wild. Woodland Park Zoo participates in a cooperative breeding program, Species Survival Plan, to help sustain a healthy, viable population of this primate species in North American zoos.

Goeldi’s monkeys are distributed through the upper Amazonian rain forest of South America, including eastern Equador, eastern Peru, western Brazil and northern Bolivia. They live in mixed deciduous forest, with discontinuous canopy including a well-developed shrub layer. They may often be found in swampy areas near rivers and streams.
