What
Woodland Park Zoo has a new baby: a pudu (POO-doo), the smallest deer in the world. The male pudu was born last Thursday and currently weighs less than 2 pounds. The unnamed fawn marks the first offspring between the 4-year-old mother and 2-year-old father. The fawn and mother are on view in the zoo’s Temperate Forest.

The southern pudu stands at only 14-18 inches high at the shoulder and weighs 14-30 pounds when full grown. The tiny deer inhabits dense temperate rain forests ranging throughout the lower Andes of Chile and Argentina. An endangered species, the pudu’s future is uncertain due to habitat destruction caused by overpopulation, agriculture, logging, hunting and other human-imposed activities. Learn more about the southern pudu from the fact sheet.

Very little is known about the pudu in the wild. As a highly respected conservation leader, Woodland Park Zoo is studying the pudu with the hope of learning more about this endangered species and contributing to its survival in the wild.
