Zoo offers workshops on proposed Long-Range Plan 2001

Focus is on zoo parking solutions

SEATTLE - The community is invited to help the zoo create parking solutions at and within close proximity of Woodland Park Zoo. Seattle Board of Park Commissioners will sponsor two workshops at the zoo in July. These sessions follow a public review and comment period on the zoo’s update of its 1976 Long-Range Plan (LRP 2001), particularly the Draft Environmental Impact Statement

We received or heard your comments on the Draft EIS. We now invite you to hear about the proposed alternatives and the pros and cons, and offer your own input. Zoo staff and a team of consultants specializing in traffic management, environmental impacts, engineering, architecture, and planning and design will be on hand to address revisions of the EIS based on your feedback.

When/Where:
Saturday, July 28, 9:00 a.m. - noon
Tuesday, July 31, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Woodland Park Zoo’s ARC near the West Gate at N. 55th St. & Phinney Ave. N. Parking is $3.50 on July 28 and free on July 31.

LRP 2001:
LRP 2001 is a 20-year physical development roadmap. The original LRP pioneered state-of-the-art zoo exhibitry while the updated plan aims to revolutionize how people use these exhibits as well as the rest of the zoo. It will adapt to changing conditions and needs unforeseen in the 1970s, placing more emphasis on achieving a broadened public education mission on wildlife conservation and visitor services, including expanded on-site visitor parking. LRP 2001 also aims to complete what was not fulfilled in the zoo’s revolutionary 1970s vision: long-needed new exhibits for jaguars, wild dogs and tigers.

The region’s burgeoning growth over the past 20 years has impacted the zoo’s neighborhood. The updated LRP improves infrastructure to accommodate this growth while keeping the zoo’s unique character, design philosophy and ecological emphasis.
