WHAT: How do you breed a herd of female elephants without a male elephant? Artificially of course. Join Pat Maluy, Woodland Park Zoo’s lead elephant keeper, in a slide-illustrated lecture, "Breeding Elephants at Woodland Park Zoo."

Discover scientific issues that affect artificial reproduction in elephants, and learn about the world’s first success utilizing artificial insemination at Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri.

Maluy also will update you on Chai, one of the zoo’s Asian elephants who moved to Dickerson Park Zoo on a temporary breeding loan. Hear all about Maluy’s cross-country trip with Chai, watch a video of Chai’s introduction to her mate, and hear about her eventual return to Woodland Park Zoo and challenges the zoo will face in bringing Chai’s pregnancy to term.

For over 20 years, Maluy has worked in a variety of capacities with animals. He has been a Woodland Park Zoo keeper for 15 years, and has worked with the zoo’s elephants for the last 12 years.
