| SEATTLE
2 Woodland Park Zoo and Zoo Society are doing cartwheels and
somersaults over last weeks Jungle Party. The fundraising
extravaganza grossed a record-breaking $1 million dollars and
was attended by nearly 1,000 zoo supporters from throughout
the region.
The
evening climaxed with guests bidding furiously to fund the
zoos Science to Save Wildlife program, as students
from Greenwood Elementary School presented their cause on
stage. An incredible total of $114,000 was raised for the
educational outreach program designed to increase the participation
of people of color in wildlife conservation and science-related
careers.
In
addition to exclusive behind-the-scenes exhibit tours, live
music, a sit-down dinner catered by Rays Boathouse,
a visit by Washington Mutual Banks Rodeo Grandmas and
a special appearance by actress Betty White, guests bid on
both live and silent auction items. Some of the live auction
highlights included "Im Going to Disney with Zoo
Director Dave Towne" (tour of the new Animal Kingdom),
which raised $15,000; "The Famous Zoo Scavenger Hunt"
sponsored by the zoos docent organization, $2,950; and
"Trout Fishing on the Tropical Rain Forests Lemur
Island," $3,550.
Other
big ticket items included a South African Conservation Safari;
a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited; a Boston Baby Grand Piano along
with popular zoo items, such as naming one of the baby gorillas.
Among
the many items of art auctioned off : individual bronze by
Tony Angell; snow geese sculpture by Georgia Gerber; a glass
butterfly by Roger Nachman and a bronze sculpture by Ross
Matteson.
This
years Jungle Party honoree was The Boeing Company
because of it's generosity and enduring commitment to the
well being of Woodland Park Zoo. Other sponsors were: Boeing
Employees Credit Union; Group Health Cooperative; Benaroya
Capital Company; Washington Dental Service; Merrill Lynch;
The Bon March; Financial Security Group; Lease Crutcher
Lewis; Seafirst Bank; UNICO Properties, Inc.; and Airborne
