Woodland Park Zoo fall/winter hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, beginning October 15 through March 14. The zoo is open daily, including holidays. The North Gate off N. 59th St. & Phinney Ave. N. is closed during the fall/winter season. PENGUIN EXHIBIT REOPENS Enjoy the zoos endangered Humboldt penguins in their newly renovated exhibit. Enhancements include a new water filtration and treatment system to help conserve water, a resurfaced pool, and a 21' glass viewing window to provide children and visitors in wheelchairs with better viewing. FALL AT THE ZOO Tigers in Crisis * Special Exhibition Through November 13 Sponsored by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA), Exxon, and the National Fish and Wildlife Service, the purpose of this national traveling exhibit is to help increase awareness of the plight of tigers. Five free-standing kiosks highlighted with dramatic life-size tiger cut-outs, photography and hands-on activities draw visitors into the story of this majestic species. New Sloth Bears and Renovated Sun Bear Exhibit Sloth bears have not been on exhibit at Woodland Park Zoo since 1982. The bears, Randy and Ann, are very active and fun to watch as they search for food and wrestle with one another. The zoos two sun bears, Edwina (ed-WEE-nuh) and Juwita (joo-WEE-tuh), have moved into a renovated exhibit next door to the sloth bears. These bears are very playful and enjoy climbing trees and catching fish in a shallow pond. Babies at the Zoo A pair of golden lion tamarins was born August 9. The birth of these endangered monkeys marks the first at the zoo in 11 years. The zoo also has two endangered gorillas born in January and March. FALL PROGRAMS Programs are through November 1 except as noted. Locations are posted at zoo entries. Animal Contact Experience 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Weekends through November 1. Touch and learn more about domestic farm animals in the Family Farm Contact Area. Subject to cancellation due to weather. Bug Moments * 11:00 a.m. Thursdays, Saturdays. Heres your chance to meet an insect, spider or other arthropod up close. Will it be a tarantula, a cockroach or maybe a surprise guest? Vanishing Farm Animals * 11:00 a.m. Sundays. Did you know that some cattle breeds are all but disappearing? Find out how farm animals are important to us, and why we should conserve rare breeds. Youll also have an opportunity to pet one of our Dexter Steers! Discovery Barn * Noon to 3:00 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays. Peer through a microscope at tiny pond life. Try on a bee keepers outfit. Focusing on animals in and around the farm, discover through activities, crafts and hands-on biofacts how bats, bees, spiders and other animals truly are our and the farmers best friends. Ocelot Feeding 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Fridays. Watch as zoo staff feed live fish to the ocelots and learn how zoo staff use a variety of feeding techniques to enrich the lives of the zoos animals. **New** Tigers * 1:30 p.m. October 3, 11, 17, 25, 31. Did you know that tigers are only successful 10% of the time while hunting? Meet staff at the tiger grotto along the west side of the Adaptations Building and learn more about these magnificent felines. Raptor Center Programs 2:30 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays. Keepers will introduce you to our resident raptors. Heres your chance to meet hawks, eagles and other birds of prey; some will demonstrate their impressive flying ability. Subject to cancellation due to weather. Animal Encounters 1:30 p.m. Fridays. Join zoo staff for close-up encounters with a variety of animals at the Open Air Theater. Discovery Carts 10:00 a.m. to Noon Weekdays; Noon to 2:00 p.m. Weekends. Unique hands-on experiences await you at Discovery Carts located at zoo exhibits. Have you ever held an elephants tooth or touched gorilla hair? Zoo docents are available to answer your questions.
