SEATTLE * Calgary, one of Woodland Park Zoo’s Rocky Mountain goats, will be missed by staff, volunteers and visitors. Zoo veterinarians humanely euthanized the 10- year-old male goat this morning due to age-related physical deterioration.

Calgary was unable to perform basic functions without pain due to kidney and joint problems. A preliminary necropsy examination revealed serious deterioration in his lungs. Final necropsy results will be forthcoming in the next week to 10 days. Rocky Mountain goats live eight to 10 years in the wild.

Calgary arrived at the zoo in 1988 from the Calgary Zoo in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Magnificent in his prime, he was the largest mountain goat in the world, according to the Guiness Book of World Records, weighing in at over 400 pounds. He also sired 15 kids.

"He will be missed dearly because he had such character," noted zoo keeper Gregg Thompson. "During his prime he was an aggressive, dominant male mountain goat, just like he was supposed to be."

Visitors can still see Woodland Park Zoo’s two remaining Rocky Mountain goats in the award-winning Northern Trail exhibit.
