In honor of the zoo’s rare and endangered Visayan (vih-SIGH-uhn) warty pigs, Woodland Park Zoo will offer free admission on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17. There’s just one catch: you have to have a Mohawk! Warty pigs boast spiky head tufts that resemble the hairdos of punk rockers. Show up at the zoo sporting a Mohawk and get in free.
Don’t have a Mohawk? From 10:00 a.m.-noon on June 17, Rudy’s Barbershop will have expert stylists on site cutting free Mohawks, or buzz cuts upon request, to warty pig enthusiasts. Rudy’s haircuts at the zoo also will guarantee free admission to the zoo.
A few local favorites will ably assist Rudy’s stylists including: Caspar Babypants, known to many as Chris Ballew, the lead singer and songwriter for The Presidents of the United States of America; Sheri Hauser, local arts diva and proprietor of Tasty Delectable Collectibles in Seattle’s Phinneywood neighborhood; and Martin Ramirez, a mammal curator at the zoo and an expert on warty pigs.
Plan to show up early. Rudy’s stylists can only shave so many heads in two hours, even with assistants. It will be first-come, first-served. Electric shears will be unplugged promptly at noon. Rudy’s is well-known in the Seattle area, offering expert haircuts and styles at trendy shops in seven nearby locations.
Top off Father’s Day with ZooPalooza presented by Carter Subaru, a music festival for kids. Local artists Caspar Babypants, Recess Monkey and The Not-Its! will perform outdoors in the North Meadow from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Festivities will include giveaways, a Root Beer Garden, a visit to the warty pig exhibit, crafts and maybe even a Mohawk cut!
