How you can Help

Planned Giving

Bequest a planned gift or provide for the zoo in your will or living trust and discover this unique tax-advantaged way to support the zoo.

Planned giving explained

What are planned gifts?
Wills, trusts, insurance and retirement beneficiary designations, are all examples of ways that you can leave a planned gift, or legacy gift, and help ensure that Woodland Park Zoo serves generations of those young and young at heart for years to come.

How do planned gifts help the zoo?
Most donors allow the zoo to determine the best use of their legacy gift by making it an unrestricted gift. The majority of those gifts are placed in our endowment to ensure that there will be support for the zoo in perpetuity. For those who want to restrict their legacy gift to a specific use, we encourage you to contact the zoo to ensure that we can properly meet your wishes.

How I benefit by making a planned gift?
The main benefit of a legacy gift is the satisfaction of knowing that you are ensuring that others will enjoy the wonder and wild at Woodland Park Zoo for generations to come. Depending on whether your legacy gift is done during your lifetime or part of your estate, you may also experience one or all of the following:

  • Increased income during your lifetime through a trust or gift annuity
  • Reduced estate, gift and/or current income taxes
  • Reduced capital gains tax
  • An opportunity to provide additional income to loved ones

You also become a member of the LionHearts Club, an honorary membership group of donors who have named Woodland Park Zoo in their estate plans. We understand that you may want to keep estate plans private, but we would appreciate having the opportunity to acknowledge and recognize your generosity. We encourage you to share your planned giving intentions with us so that we can thanks you and share the wonders of the zoo through a special tour.

LionHearts Society

When you add Woodland Park Zoo to your will or estate plans, you become a member of a very special donor group, the LionHearts Society. With your permission, we will list your name among the growing number of LionHearts Society members who have provided for future gifts to the zoo and who, by example, encourage others to take this important step.

As a member of the LionHearts Club you receive the following benefits:

  • Recognition in our Annual Report
  • A copy of myZOO, our quarterly magazine
  • An invitation to the annual Thrive event
  • Invitations to exhibit openings and other special preview events at the zoo
