Own a true original! Woodland Park Zoo’s orangutan, 39-year-old male Towan, has created two beautiful paintings, rendered in his own hand. Thes one-of-a-kind paintings each measure 12x16” and exhibit a colorful masterpiece completed with acrylic paints, skillfully matted in a glass-encased 21x25” black wood frames.

Funds raised through the eBay auction of these paintings will help support the 2009 conference of the Third Annual International Congress of Zookeepers/36th American Association of Zookeepers National Conference. This combined ICZ/AAZK conference represents the first time these two professional zoo keeper organizations have joined to bring together animal care professionals from around the world to the United States. The conference will improve the levels of communication between keepers from around the world, and serve as a basis for supporting the development of zoo keeping as a profession in regions where professional keeper associations do not currently exist. This will ultimately benefit wildlife located in zoos and those in conservation projects everywhere.

The conference will be held at Woodland Park Zoo in September 2009 with zookeepers coming from zoos all around the world. This is truly a unique chance for professionals to meet, network and learn valuable new insights into their profession and to help them share new techniques in order to care for the animals in their institutions in innovative new ways. Some of the topics will include:

• animal behavioral enrichment techniques
• diet and nutrition
• keeper and animal safety
• integrating field conservation with the work they perform in zoos
