Coming May 2, 2009, Humboldt penguins make a triumphant return to Woodland Park Zoo! These playful but endangered birds are native to the rocky, arid coast of Peru's Punta San Juan. The new exhibit mimics the dramatic geology of this area to help tell their story of survival. But there's more than meets the eye. The exhibit is also an example of an environmentally minded, sustainable exhibit. Using geothermal energy to heat and cool the water to a penguin-perfect 55 degrees Fahrenheit, a "constructed wetland" that filters the water biologically to protect from polluted run-off, and a host of other state-of-the-art features that save energy, water and improve water quality all contribute to a fantastic new exhibit for both birds and zoo visitors.
We also support direct field conservation efforts of Humboldt penguins in Punta San Juan which hosts one of the largest remaining populations of the Humboldts. Read more about this project.
