Educational Program Sponsorships
The
purpose of education at the zoo is to inspire an understanding
of nature and a commitment to conservation.
With
a mission of education and conservation, the zoo serves as a
vital resource for many students and teachers across the state
each year. In 2005, more than 100,000 students and teachers enjoyed
and learned from a wide variety of programs offered at Woodland
Park Zoo. Each program has a specific financial goal to continue
supporting its client base. Should you be interested in supporting
one of our fabulous educational programs, please contact us for
more information.
Forest
Explorers
This award-winning program introduces Seattle school district second grade
students to the important components of Costa Rica’s tropical rain forests
and Washington State’s temperate forests beginning in the classroom and
culminating with an all expense-paid field trip to the zoo. The field trip
consists of an interactive auditorium program in which students are transformed
into different parts of both forests and a tour of the zoo’s Temperate
and Tropical Rain Forest bioclimatic zones.
SOAR
(Save Our Amazing Raptors) Outreach
Zookeepers, accompanied by raptors (birds of prey), visit classrooms throughout
King County to teach pre-K to 12th grade students about raptors and raptor
ecology.
Teacher
Training
The Teacher Training program provides teachers across the state with opportunities
to attend topical workshops about plants, animals and the environment. Workshops
and summer institutes consist of lectures, hands-on activities, tours, materials
and much more to help teachers gather information for the classroom and meet
state and local education requirements.
Wild
Wise
The award-winning Wild Wise outreach program travels to schools throughout
Washington. With a focus on Washington wildlife, this high impact multi-media
presentation and hands-on wildlife education program encourages 5th, 6th and
7th graders to take an active interest in the natural world around them. Students
learn to hone their observation skills as they “visit” Washington
habitats by taking field notes, sketching wildlife and mapping locations.
Zoo
Corps
Zoo Corps is a unique opportunity for teens to apply academic skills to “real-life” situations,
while learning about wildlife conservation and career opportunities. Teens
are required to attend an extensive training program and earn service-learning
credits as they volunteer at the zoo. Teens who complete their requirements
are eligible to compete for paid internships.
