$12.20/hour

Posting:
Applications are now being accepted for Program Interpreter in the Education Department at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. There are two, seasonal, part-time positions to be filled at this time.

Summary:
This position is responsible for presenting animal encounters and other public programming at a variety of locations, which may include the Tropical Rain Forest’s jaguar and flamingo exhibits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following:

  • Ensure that all programmed activities scheduled take place on time and run smoothly.
  • Provide regularly scheduled educational programming, including animal encounters, interpretation or leading activities in the jaguar/flamingo exhibits and on zoo grounds.
  • Periodically conduct programming tied to special events.
  • Collect program attendance and provide statistics.
  • Provide daily maintenance check of program props, structures, etc.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Ability to work a flexible schedule required. Weekend and night work may be required.
  • Experience handling mammals, reptiles and arthropods strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellent teaching/presentation/public speaking ability.
  • Enthusiastic and customer-service oriented. Ability to handle a variety of customer service issues.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member, and independently with little supervision.
  • Knowledge of the zoo, zoology, biology, ecology and conservation.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Commitment to the mission of the zoo and the institution’s Core Values.

Education/Experience:
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college in the field of wildlife biology, drama, theater or related field; or a minimum of two years experience in theater, drama, interpretation or related field and/or related life experiences and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of wildlife conservation issues preferred.

Physical Demands:
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds when lifting objects, props, etc.

Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is usually exposed to outside weather conditions, while providing presentations to Zoo visitors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
