Assistant, African Beading, in the Education Department at
Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. There is one hourly, seasonal,
part-time position to be filled at this time.
Summary:
Responsible for the operation of “Upapi” seasonal
visitor experience that runs May 1-September 30, 2008. Upapi
means “beading” in Swahili. In this program, visitors
make beaded bracelets to support the zoo’s conservation
projects in Africa.
Essential
Duties and Responsibilities: include the
following:
- Ensure
that programs take place on time and run smoothly.
- Provide
educational and African cultural information for visitors
including very young children and their caregivers.
- Sell
beading materials and assist with bracelet assembly.
- Collect
program statistics and deliver to the Public Programs Coordinator
in a timely manner.
- Provide
daily maintenance check of Upapi program materials. If
needed, concerns/questions to the Public Programs Coordinator.
- Responsible
for monitoring cash bag, accepting fees, and making change.
- Set-up,
organize and arrange any necessary equipment.
- Minimum
of 18 years old.
- Perform
other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:
High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or one
to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent
combination of education and experience in customer service,
beadwork, and/or cash handling. First-hand experience with
African people, habitats, and culture especially beading and
wildlife conservation issues desired, but not required.
Physical
Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required
to stand and walk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to
sit, use hands to finger or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop. The employee
must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds when lifting objects of African
art, program props, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include
close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Work
Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is usually exposed to outside
weather conditions, while providing presentation to Zoo visitors. The noise level
in the work environment is usually moderate.
