TOWAN
Adult Male 0rangutan

Born: February 1968, at Woodland Park Zoo.Twin of Chinta, father of Belawan and Heran
Hybrid: cross between Sumatran and Bornean subspecies
Weight: 266 pounds (120 kg)
History: Raised in the nursery with gorillas; separated from gorillas in 1973 at age 5. Knows how to use tools such as a shovel, trash can, rake or wrench

Distinctive features: Largest of all the orangutans; long hair, cheek pads, throat pouch, long calls

HERAN
Juvenile Male Orangutan

Born: February 1989, at Woodland Park Zoo. Offspring of Melati and Towan.
Hybrid: Cross between Sumatran and Bornean hybrids
Weight: 139.5 pounds (63 kg) and growing rapidly

Distinctive features: Sparse hair on waist and knees; beginning to develop cheek pads, beard and throat pouch. Most active, rapidly moves from one exhibit to the other

BELAWAN
Adult Female Orangutan

Born: May 1981, at Woodland Park Zoo. Offspring of Melati and Towan.
Hybrid: Cross between Sumatran and Bornean hybrids
Weight: 129 pounds (58 kg)

Distinctive features: Small, thin build; long coat; light-colored eyelids; shyest of group. Often follows Towan or plays with Heran

MELATI
Adult Female 0rangutan

Born: December 1971, at the National Zoo (Washington, D.C.).Mother of Belawan and Heran
Hybrid: cross between Sumatran and Bornean subspecies
Weight: 140 pounds (63 kg)
History: Received as infant from National Zoo. Melati is a twin

Distinctive features: Medium build; only two fingers on her left hand due to an accident. Most visible, often seen in hammock nests

CHINTA
Adult Female 0rangutan

Born: February 1968, at Woodland Park Zoo.
  Twin of Towan
Hybrid: cross between Sumatran and Bornean subspecies
Weight: 163 pounds (73 kg)
History: Early history same as Towan’s

Distinctive features: Largest female and second in size after Towan. Has bangs; hair falls forward on her forehead. Often seen on the ground. Prefers shaded thickets
