Woodland
Park Zoo Support of Orangutan Conservation:
With an initial presence in 1984 (Tanjung Puting) in Indonesia in support of
Orangutan Conservation on the ground, Woodland Park Zoo has continued to work
in support of orangutan conservation throughout the years.

Survey of Intestinal Parasites in Wild, Ex-Captive and Captive
Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus): An American Association of Zoo Keepers
Research Project", Harmony Frazier, Birute Galdikas, Ph.D.,
William Karesh, DVM, 1984
1988 – 1991:
Working with the Indonesian and Malaysian governments, zoos and
field sites, a field study was done entitled;
" Evaluation of the Genetic Diversity of Wild Populations of Orangutans" William
Karesh, DVM, Harmony Frazier, Steve O'Brien Ph.D. Supported through and IMLS

of Health
1998 – 2003:
We gave over $10,500 in grants and supplies in support to Wanariset,
Orangutan Rehabilitation center in Indonesia.
WPZ
staff members Harmony Frazier, Andy Antilla and Dr. Darin Collins
all visited the Wanariset center during that time to deliver supplies,
share information, do trainings and in Andy's case, to work at
the center as one of the staff over many months.
2003 – 2005:
We have supported Orangutan Conservation Project in Gunung Palung
through grant support to Dr. Cheryl Knott. To date grants have
totaled over $11, 950.
Puget
Sound Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers Support:
We are participating in an ongoing cell phone recycling program, with all the
proceeds being donated to BOS-USA, an orangutan conservation group, at this
time. The first shipment of phones secured about $500, and we expect to receive
about $1,500 from the second shipment (recently sent out).
PSAAZK
has also recently developed a relationship with Aramark, the food
concessionaires at Woodland Park Zoo. It has agreed to donate $1
from the sale of each of their orangutan mugs to BOS-USA. The estimated
total donation from this program will be about $1,200. |
