Frequently Asked Questions About Wolves return to previous
Do these wolves howl?
Not very often in front of the public. They sometimes can be heard howling late evening and early morning, especially during the fall.

Where are the wolves?
The exhibit has space behind the broad hill where they can, if they choose, remove themselves from public view. They’ve also started digging den holes where they spend the nights.

Do wolves attack humans?
In North America, there have been four documented cases of wolves attacking humans and no deaths. In contrast, there have been 12 human fatalities in the past 20 years from attacks by wolf/dog hybrids, and, between 1991 and 1997, 12 to 15 fatalities from attacks by domestic dogs.

Are you going to breed the wolves?
No. The current wild population of gray wolves is sufficient to maintain the species. Zoos have limited space to accommodate animals and must make intelligent decisions as to which animals most require captive breeding programs.

Do we have wild wolves in Washington?
Yes. Wolves are in the North Cascades. They come down from Canada, and there’s a plan under consideration to reintroduce wolves to Olympic National Park. Over the last several years, wolves have been successfully reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park and central Idaho and are soon to be reintroduced into eastern Arizona and western New Mexico.
