Frequently Asked Questions About Elephants return to previous
What was the biggest elephant ever recorded?
According to the Guinness Book of Records, the biggest elephant ever recorded was a male African elephant from Angola that weighed 24,000 pounds. It is mounted at the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

Do elephants ever forget?
Although elephants do have good memories, they forget once in a while. Possessing a good memory helps elephants survive in the wild. It enables them to find food and water during times of drought and avoid danger when necessary.

Can elephants run?
Technically, elephants are incapable of running. However they can walk very fast, and have been clocked at 18-20 mph! This is as fast as world class Olympic hurdlers.

Do elephants see color?
No one really knows whether elephants can perceive color. More recently, scientists and zoo keepers have been studying the elephants’ senses and initial indications are that they may have a limited range of color perception. Horses and cattle cannot see color at all!
Are elephants afraid of mice?
No, this is a myth. If an elephant were to encounter a mouse, it would likely ignore it. If the elephant was bored, it might try to crush a mouse with its foot!

How long can an elephant live?
Despite rumors that elephants live for over 100 years, the oldest elephant ever recorded died February 26, 2003, at the age of 86. His name was "Lin Wang" and he lived in captivity at the Taipei Zoo in Taiwan. Average life expectancy for an elephant in captivity and the wild is about 45 years.

Can African and Asian elephants interbreed?
Yes, but this would never occur in the wild as the ranges of the two species do not overlap. A hybrid birth did occur in England at the Chester Zoo in July, 1978. The calf, which was named "Motty," only lived 10 days. Her death was the result of a bacterial infection of the umbilicus, so it is unknown how healthy she would have been or how long she would have lived. This is the only recorded hybrid birth between Loxodonta africana and Elephas maximus, the African and Asian elephant.

How many muscles does an elephant’s trunk contain?
The trunk is made of many different types of tissue, but contains no bone. The number of muscles within the trunk is estimated to be as high as 100,000! Contrast that with the entire number of muscles in the human body, about 600.
