AFRICAN ELEPHANT

Adult Female African Elephant

Born:
1969/70, in Kenya. Arrived in 1971
Weight: 8,050 pounds (October 2004)
History: Originally imported from Kenya as an orphan from the wild. Considered to be the dominant cow or herd leader.
Distinctive features: Watoto is the only African elephant at Woodland Park Zoo and is distinguished by her large ears, saddle-shaped back and tusks. She is also the tallest elephant at over nine feet. She has a large notch in her right ear.

Elephas maximus

Chai
Adult Female Asian Elephant

Born: 1979, in Thailand. Name rhymes with "shy" Arrived in 1980
Weight: 8,284 pounds (October 2004)
History: Chai was a gift to the citizens of Seattle from Thai Airways International and the Dusit Zoo, (Bangkok, Thailand) to celebrate the inaugural service of the airline to the United States.
Distinctive features: Chai is uniformly dark skinned. She also has a crooked tail and the tops of her ears do not curl forward. Her calf, Hansa, the first elephant ever born in Washington and at the zoo, died unexpectedly on June 8, 2007.

Bamboo
Adult Female Asian Elephant

Born: 1967, in Thailand
Weight: around 8,000 pounds (June 2006)
History: Bamboo arrived at Woodland Park Zoo from Thailand in 1968 at approximately a year old. She started out living in the Children’s Zoo in the Family Farm before she was moved to the old Elephant House. In 1989 Bamboo moved to the newly built Elephant Forest along with the rest of the herd.

Distinctive features: Bamboo is the "hairier" of the two adult Asian elephants.
