The teen volunteer program at
Woodland Park Zoo |
Zoo Corps, Woodland Park Zoo's stellar teen development program, is housed in the zoo's newest feature, Zoomazium, an indoor, all-season nature playspace. Zoo Corps recruits interested teens from diverse backgrounds to help the zoo provide conservation education for all ages, especially young children. Public speaking, performance skills, and an interest in educating younger children and families about animals, nature and conservation are desirable. Training in these areas is provided.
Some basics about the Zoo Corps program:
- teens must be in high school, grades 9-12 or equivalent AND between 14 and 18 years old
- Zoo Corps teach work and leadership skills, builds confidence and inspires conservation awareness
- mandatory nine-week training program, four (4) hours per week (Saturday afternoons March through May
- teens must provide at least 30 hours of service at the zoo from May through August
- hands-on contact and working directly with animals is limited and not a key element of the program. Teens must complete additional animal handling training and certification for animals used in specific programs
Zoo
Corps offers participants the chance to grow personally, develop
real world skills, learn teamwork, increase their knowledge
of animals and their
habitats,
and to inspire conservation awareness. Teens also participate in monthly
meetings, zoo special events, and enrichment programming in a supportive,
fun learning
environment.
