This summer's zoo campers will be making a difference for wildlife right here in Seattle. In a partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation and Northwest Environmental Education Council, Woodland Park Zoo's day camps (Zooper: One Can Make a Difference (full-day campers) and Zoo U: Wildlife Conservation) will be working on a habitat restoration project in Lower Woodland Park. In addition to having fun exploring the zoo and learning about zoo animals, campers will help plant, water, and weed a freshly cleared section of the park helping to create better habitat for our local wildlife while learning conservation leadership skills at the same time.

KINDER CAMP
Children must be 3 by April 1, 2009 and must be fully potty trained before camp. Kinder Camp is an exciting blend of games, activities and chances to see zoo animals while limiting the scope of camp each week to accommodate little legs.

ZOOPER DAY CAMP
We offer two curricula so children can attend one or two weeks of Zooper Day Camp. If selecting two weeks, please be sure to pick an A and a B week. Order does not matter.

  1. Animal Architects (A): We will learn about some amazing animal builders and the structures they create. Learn why animals build, what they build and how they do it. We’ll even try to re-create some animal structures.
  2. One Can Make a Difference (B): Children will be empowered to make a difference for wildlife and themselves with small actions they can do every day. We’ll learn how these actions have impacts in our homes, in our state, and even globally!

Campers participating in Full-Day One Can Make A Difference Zooper Day Camp and Wildlife Conservation Zoo U will participate in a restoration project at Lower Woodland Park.

ZOO UNIVERSITY
We offer two curricula so children can attend one or two weeks of Zooper Day Camp. If selecting two weeks, please be sure to pick an A and a B week. Order does not matter.

Animal Behavior: Investigate what motivates animal behavior and how animals “learn” to do these things. Participants will think like scientists as they explore animal behaviors and design their own experiments to study interesting animal behaviors of their choosing.

August 18-22 only: Animal Behavior will be offered in partnership with the Seattle Aquarium. During this week participants will spend time at Woodland Park Zoo and the Seattle Aquarium, with transportation provided. There is an additional fee for this week only.

Wildlife Conservation: What can we do to help wildlife? From wild animal tracking to recycling bottles, from changing the laws to changing the things we buy, participants will explore what people all over the world, including here at the zoo, are doing to conserve wildlife and how they can take an active part in that process.

Please review the schedule below to select the dates/times most appropriate for you. If selecting two weeks, please be sure to pick an A and a B week. This schedule is also available as a PDF document you can download and print for your convenience.

All the World’s a Zoo camps are taught by instructor teams with theater and environmental education expertise. Half-day sessions are a modified and shortened curriculum. Please note that children will be placed into age appropriate groups. We cannot honor all “group with” requests.

Myths and Monsters: Stories throughout history have told of fantastic creatures with amazing powers. But do dragons and unicorns really exist? We will learn more as we discover the truth behind some of the world’s best-known tales. See the animals who inspired these myths and learn about the real animals. Then, dream up new creatures as we create stories of our own.

I Spy: Penguins in the jungle? Disappearing monkeys? There’s something strange going on with the animals, and it’s up to our secret agents to solve the mystery! We’ll travel around the world sorting things out as we learn about animal behavior. Use your detective skills to track down the culprit and restore order to the animal kingdom!
